Standard Globe Valves

Standard Globe Valves are primarily designed to regulate fluid flow and shut-off the fluid when needed. While ball valves and gate valves are generally preferred for shut-off applications, globe valves are still used in certain cases for this purpose. Unlike check valves, which allow fluid to flow in only one direction, globe valves are bi-directional, meaning they can accommodate fluid flow in either direction.

The working principle of a globe valve involves a disc that can be raised or lowered from its seat to control the flow of the fluid. This disc can be manually operated or controlled via actuators, allowing precise regulation of the flow volume. The diagram of the valve shows how this mechanism functions, highlighting the key components that allow for efficient flow control.

Globe valves, commonly used in piping systems for the petrochemical industry, are manufactured to meet a variety of key standards to ensure their reliability and performance. The primary specifications for these valves include:

● BS 1873: Cast steel valves for general applications.

● API 603: Stainless steel valves for corrosive environments.

● API 602/BS 5352: Forged steel valves designed for high-pressure systems.

● API 598 and BS EN 12266-1: Standards for valve testing and inspection.

● ASME B16.10: Defines the face-to-face dimensions for valves.

● ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47: Flanged connection standards for valves.

● ASME B16.25: Design requirements for butt weld connections.

● ASME B16.34: Pressure-temperature ratings based on material grade.

Globe Valve Advantages:

1. Effective Flow Control: Globe valves are excellent for throttling and flow regulation.

2. Easy Maintenance: The seats of globe valves can be easily resurfaced, making maintenance straightforward.

3. Stop-Check Functionality: Globe valves can also serve as stop-check valves when the disc is not attached to the stem, offering added flexibility.

Globe Valve Disadvantages:

1. Pressure Drop: Unlike gate valves, globe valves tend to cause a pressure drop in the piping system. This is due to their non-linear flow path, which features an "S-shaped" passage, causing greater resistance to fluid flow.

2. Higher Torque for Shut-Off: The torque required to shut off a globe valve is typically higher compared to a gate valve, making them less efficient in certain shut-off applications.

These pros and cons highlight the suitability of globe valves for specific applications, especially where throttling and precise flow regulation are needed, but they may not be ideal in systems where minimizing pressure drop is crucial.

Types of Globe Valves

Globe valves come in three main configurations based on the shape of their body, each offering distinct advantages depending on the application:

1. Straight or "T" Type Globe Valve:

◎ Description: This is the most common design, where the flow path is linear, and the inlet and outlet are aligned in a straight line through the valve body.

◎ Advantages: Offers a simple design, easy to install, and is effective for regulating flow in standard piping systems.

2. Angle or "90 Degrees" Globe Valve:

◎ Description: The flow path in this valve is at a 90-degree angle, where the inlet and outlet are positioned perpendicularly within the valve body.

◎ Advantages: Suitable for situations where space is limited, or where the direction of flow needs to be changed at a 90-degree angle without significant impact on flow control.

3. Y Pattern or "Wye Globe Valve":

◎ Description: In this design, the body of the Standard Globe Valves are shaped like the letter "Y," with the inlet and outlet angled in a more gradual direction, reducing resistance and turbulence.

◎ Advantages: Ideal for high-pressure systems where minimizing flow resistance and enhancing efficiency is essential, as the Y-pattern design reduces pressure drop and flow restriction.

Each type of globe valve is selected based on the specific needs of the pipeline, such as space constraints, flow characteristics, and system pressure.
